The inaugural trip hosted by Rapala Tours in conjunction with Craig Bertram Smith Clothing to Linene Island resort took place from the 14 - 21 Sept. The aim of these trips is to supply the angler with enough knowledge and preparation before the trip, steepening the learning curve and focussing on all the facets covered at Linene which are Popping, Jigging, DropShot, Rock&Surf and Estuary.
The guiding was done by myself and lodge manager Adrian Westraadt. The conditions over the spring tides were perfect for popping from the spit for Gt's and they didn't disappoint. 5 Gt's over 100cm were caught with the biggest fish caught by Julian Hieber with a 28kg brute taken on a Williamson Rocket Popper.

Craig Bertram Smith joined Adrian for the afternoon session from the boat and landed the fish of the trip. A Gt of 38kg taken on a Williamson Popper. Jigging also produced the goods with Amberjack making an appearance bending jigs and straightening hooks (have to use VMC's when taking on these boys).
Dropshotting proved to be highly effective with Bludgers, Gt's and Yellowspot Kingfish especially enjoying the plastics. Unfortunately we lost many fish to sharks. After the group left, we stayed on for some tackle testing and were joined by two great guys, Gerard Powell and Hennie Schoeman. During an afternoon session, we had big Zambesi sharks below the boat taxing every fish that we hooked. At one stage I hooked into a Yellowspot Kingfish that immediately got taxed. The shark stayed on the line probably being hooked outside the business end. After half an hour a very tired shark of about 90kg and angler saw each other for the first time next to the boat. The Shimano Aerocast, Sustain 6000 and 30lb PowerPro withstood everything the shark could throw at it -- I have yet to come across a more powerful set-up for its class. I could not believe the power exerted by the fish on the gear and it passed with flying colours.
All in all a brilliant trip with great people at one of the best all-round fishing destinations in the world. Rapala will be hosting 2 more trips to Linene Island resort this year from the 25 - 31 Oct and 9 - 15 Nov on an all-in basis.
